Artest watch

The media trade buzz regarding Ron Artest quieted down later in the week, and with good reason.

Numerous sources close to the team tell me there have been no Kings-Lakers discussions in the last week. The Lakers, for the time being, appear to be looking for trade options that don't include taking on Kenny Thomas' contract. While a third team could help fix that problem, there hasn't been one yet that fits the equation. Meanwhile, the Lakers are looking long and hard at their point guard spot as well. They have reportedly made an offer to Jorge Garbojosa.

As for other teams, here's what I'm hearing regarding a few (and, no, this is not a comprehensive list - just hitting on a few of the lesser talked-about potential Artest destinations)...

Dallas: They've already revealed their interest, but the only deal that gets done on the Kings' end here is Artest for Josh Howard. For now, the Mavs won't do it. For now, that is...

Cleveland: There has been some speculation that the Cavs would make a play here, but a source close to the Cavs says it's not likely. Not impossible - especially if January brings a subpar record and King James is getting restless again - but not likely.

Detroit: Could this be why Artest was so interested in interviewing brawl instigator John Green a while back? It would be a brilliant PR move if the Pistons were looking to put a package together for Artest.

And from what I was told from one source close to the Pistons, they are. I've yet to get this info from more than one person, so stay tuned. But much like the Mavs' situation, this could be one of those where the player the Kings want (perhaps Tayshaun Prince) would be different than the one offered (Jason Maxiell, anyone?). Pure speculation on my part in terms of the potential pieces.

Phoenix: I've been hearing this as a possibility from the beginning but heard nothing in the way of actual talks.

The player always first discussed is Leandro Barbosa (four years, $27 million left with player option in fourth year), the Roadrunner who could add quite some punch to the Kings' backcourt. As for the next logical question of why the Kings wouldn't leave that role to the likes of John Salmons and Francisco Garcia, consider this: Salmons (three years, $16 million remaining) was believed to be available around draft time if it meant the Kings could trade their pick and move up; Garcia is coming off a breakout year, but the Kings must decide by Oct. 31 whether they want to ante up for an extension. - Sam Amick

thanks that's what i thought.
i'll say what i said a few weeks ago, if Artest becomes a FA: he's a Laker.

probably not - maybe they get S&T - which is unlikely - but more so unlikely they get traded to LA

I will say LA likes Deng - he was in the Kobe package - but I don't see anything feasible there at this point

my thinking was

if josh smith demands sign and trade since noone but the hawks can pay him what he wants

wouldn't the hawks wanting to stay in the hunt take a

lamar+farmar+mihm package

i think it gives them a real PF who can help horford rebound and is a playmaker

with deng

i just think rumors have flown constantly that lamar can be linked to chicago

if he says he will only sign one year

i think lamar+farmar+mihm is the best deal they could get

So then we get our defensive "3" and a back up big all in the same person. Problem is, Smith still can't shoot. His 3PT% last season was 24.9% and he took only 100

there is more to a SF than just being shooter.

Yes I know that but when people complain that LO can't shoot I just want to point out that getting Josh Smith is only going to make our outside shooting problem worse. Smith is a great player and was one of the reasons that the Hawks vs. Celtics series went to 7 games but he just doesn't solve the problems that people state LO has.

Josh Smith will never be sign and traded for Lamar Odom...throw in Farmar and Ariza and maybe you have a deal. As stupid as Atl is, they are gfinally a playoff team, no way they will just trade that away for an expiring player

he is a free agent

an my scenario was if he pulls a rashard lewis which it looks like hes doing

at that point the hawks have no choice but to make that deal top keep their team afloat

that is a main complaint

but josh smith is 23 years old

is 10 times the defender lamar is

10 times the finisher

10 times the shot blocker

10 times more aggressive

can go both left and right

has improved every year hes been in the league

is as long as lamar and as versatile

top 3 athlete in the league

you are right our shooting issues from that spot stay the same if not get worse but considering he does everything way better than lamar except rebounding and is 5 years younger with 3 times the work ethic it makes more sense

our talent level increases while our window gets blown wide open from 5 years to possibly 10

not just a free agent, a RESTRICTED free agent..meaning the only reasonable way he or Deng is a Laker is if they are sign and traded. Even if we were to offer the full MLE (which is not much less than the qualifying offer) for a season and then sign him to a monster deal, ATL would just match that offer.

It won't happen unless for some reason ATL feels that their star player who is 22 and monster defender and athlete is not worth the MLE. Never happening.

Maybe I'm miss understanding what you are suggesting...

thats what i'm saying

if he decides he wont go back to atlanta which is 50/50 right now we have by far the best offer besides miami and detroit who are in the east so atlanta wouldn't be stupid

we are in the west and we have the perfect replacement for josh smith for them in lamar

lamar
farmar
mihm

gets it done if they are pushed to trade him

Why do we need to give up others beside LO for Josh Smith. I dont understand why we have to give up Farmer and Ariza too. Them gettin LO is enough he doesnt even want to be there number 1 and how much is he signing for anyway- $16-17 million. If thats the case too much. LO straight up or no deal. For some reason everyone wants to give half the team that got us to the Finals this year for one player-NO WAY> We are in a position now where if its a good deal we think about it. If its not then we dont simple as that. We have a great team already one that will be even better with Bynum back.

If we give them Lamar, Farmar, and Mihm for Smith, we are going to be taking on one damn large contract that Smith signs.

Gasol, Bynum, Smith, and Kobe would easily put us over the cap just with those four. .

yes, but it does give us the best core in the NBA.

plus, you have Smith to play alongside bynum when kobe and gasol retire.

smith is as good if not better than lamar at 22 years old

we have to give them farmar or ariza along with mihm
